the house in Aberdeen

there’s a house in Aberdeen that’s dressed for Christmas:
with fake snow in the yard – man, how cool is that!
& a snowman in a red Santy Claus hat
a giant Grinch sits in a rockin’ chair
& a voice sweetly sings “I’m walkin’ thru the air…”

there’s a house in Aberdeen that’s dressed for Christmas:
on the pavement out in front a dog goes ‘woof!
think he’s barkin’ at the mammoth Santa up on the roof
all the windows are ablaze with tiny twinklin’ lights
there’s even a huge toy soldier resplendent in dress whites

there’s a house in Aberdeen that’s dressed for Christmas:
gaily coloured gift boxes are scattered around the yard
& at the bottom of the steps sits a huge Christmas card
I wish that I could go inside & share their celebrations
but it’s enough to know I’m loved as I enjoy their decorations

sunset o’er Scottish hills

the day’s last light is loathe to depart
it hides amongst the autumn-colored leaves
I’m safe in this cocoon with one dear to my heart
awed by the evenin’ tapestry God weaves

faint lights shine in the windows
of farmhouses nestled in the valley
I dream in not-quite-darkness
watchin’ the sky for the finale

scattered cows an’ sheep
stake their places in the fields
their eyes like mine raised skyward
toward the paintbrush that God wields

another day has ended
with nae fanfare or frills
an’ my soul is filled with peace
as the sun sets o’er Scottish hills

undecided

my beloved country is currently divided
so my everyday life is now two-sided
one group yellin’ YES whilst the other nods NO
but it’s together towards the unknown we all go

I’ve read every article – every note
I remain unsure which way to vote
I’ve no real interest in politics
but this current divisiveness I long to fix

my heart swells to see the Saltire dancin’ in the Scottish air
an’ whether yay or nay for her people I dearly care
each day that I’m here I bless those bonnie skies above
I pray for my beloved Scotland – let us remember how to love

Glencoe

they battle for dominance
the sun, the wind, the rain
each convinced of their importance
to this vast & desolate plain

spiny gorse & heather
make their home on Rannoch Moor
that bleak yet bonnie expanse
where the MacDonalds did not endure

an age-old wilderness
a silent space profound
where the slain doth sleep
in cruel unhallowed ground

mute majestic mountains
timeless secrets they keep
a stark & savage beauty
that makes me want to weep

the music of the waterfalls
a mighty peak kissed by a cloud
I am embraced by the Glencoe mountains
into their mystery I am allowed
