bramble boy

it’s early autumn
when he first comes
as seagulls fight
o’er cracker crumbs
her heart beats
like African drums
when she spies the bramble boy

autumn’s not
her favourite time of year
the days grow short
the skies are drear
yet she feels peace
seeing he is near
her steadfast bramble boy

leaves leap from trees
those we love die
the summer sun
deserts the sky
when the geese fly south
she wants to cry
‘til she sees the bramble boy

each September
in her garden appears
accompanied by the sound
of insectile cheers
he’ll spend the winter
quieting all her fears
her beloved bramble boy

autumn in the kingdom of Alba

another Friday morning
once again I open my eyes
to another spectacular
Scottish sunrise

my heart still beats
with its heavy load
yet I smile when I think
of strollin’ down Perth Road

my walk to work is soothing
daily exercise
checkin’ out the people
& the changin’ Dundee skies

a time for me to think
in the chilly mornin’ peace
a time for silent prayer
hopin’ sorrow will decrease

the calendar says summer is over

today I’m feelin’ sad
an’ I’m unsure as to why
could be the unwelcome knowledge
that all those I love will one day die

could be the arrival of autumn
a season I’ve come to hate
as dead leaves dance through dark nights
I’m reminded of my loved ones fate

maybe it’s the simple fact
that my mirror says I’ve grown older
possessor of eyes that water
as autumn winds blow ever colder

those who were my idols
heroes, friends & family
cancer, heart attacks, accidents, old age
kidnap all those who once loved me

an’ yet I’m not much bothered
by the thought this’ll happen to me
my death will come as a relief
at last the black dog will let me be

August

autumn approaches
the sky changes its hue
& from her kitchen window
she sees a different view:
falling geranium petals
a slower growing lawn
petunias that have died
the later arrival of dawn

she dislikes autumn
mornings where she sees each breath
the chill that kills the ivy
harbinger of summer’s death
the sun now sets much quicker
(though it’s not the dark she fears)
she’s a faithful summer baby –
its end always brings her to tears

she cares nought for football
bonfires & Halloween
in love with the heat shimmer of sidewalks
cloudless skies crisp & clean
to hell with all the colors
of the ‘pretty’ autumn leaves
without the heat of the summer sun
her soul curls up – it grieves

autumn’s approach brings unwanted reminders
of those once loved who left
the loss of sunshine’s extra hour
is a crime – it feels like theft
she loathes the sight of bare tree branches
etched against the sky like stained gauze
when autumn starts to stalk her
she locks all doors & withdraws

sunset o’er Scottish hills

the day’s last light is loathe to depart
it hides amongst the autumn-colored leaves
I’m safe in this cocoon with one dear to my heart
awed by the evenin’ tapestry God weaves

faint lights shine in the windows
of farmhouses nestled in the valley
I dream in not-quite-darkness
watchin’ the sky for the finale

scattered cows an’ sheep
stake their places in the fields
their eyes like mine raised skyward
toward the paintbrush that God wields

another day has ended
with nae fanfare or frills
an’ my soul is filled with peace
as the sun sets o’er Scottish hills

Dundee fog

as greedy as a hog
is the Dundee fog
it swallows everything in sight:
buildings, people, busses, light
white ghost with a silent hiss
causing cars to hit ‘n miss
floats thru town in swatches swirly
makes her hair all damp ‘n curly
‘n yet she loves the gauzy shroud
that conceals her from the crowd
here she hides from grief & fears
in Dundee fog she disappears

Dundee fog

autumn haiku

now, in the morning
she shivers at the bus stop
she should have worn gloves

* * * * * 

playful autumn winds
run riot through her styled hair
she is not amused

* * * * * 

her shoulders are slumped
as she walks slowly downhill
leaves crunch underfoot

* * * * * 

the sun grows tired
it seeks its celestial bed
ever earlier
