at the Wheatsheaf

in a slow-setting sun
we amble slowly along
as the skies of West Beckham
ring with bird song
I’m holdin’ the hand
of my best friend
ready for tea
at the Wheatsheaf Inn

an old stone building
covered in ivy that’s run amok
in a gorgeous setting
that leaves me dumbstruck
I’m so happy to be
with my best friend
walkin’ through the doors
of the Wheatsheaf Inn

the owner greets us
with a dazzling smile
she shows us to our table
chatterin’ all the while
I look over the top of the menu
at my best friend
we’re both delighted
by the choices
at the Wheatsheaf Inn

the food arrives
& it’s delicious
we share our couples’ jokes
laughin’ though they’re repetitious
sated by food & sun
I give my hand to my best friend
as we walk back to the cottage
& away from the Wheatsheaf Inn

on the A92

the sun came out
once we hit the A92
light that kicked aside the clouds
suspended in a sky of blue

in rolling fields
sat scattered hay bales
tenement blocks
housing spiders & snails

cottages hug the road
adorned with wild flowers
emerald hills glisten
from an early morning shower

a lone motorcyclist
rides into the wind
along the horizon
turbines lazily spin

so many times
we’ve cruised the A92
so many memories
of me & you

benefits blues

ah’m unemployed at Christmasbenefits-blues
mah pockets gots no bucks
jobless at Christmas
man, dis really sucks
every day I struggle
not to cry
when ah thinks of all da presents
ah cain’t afford ta buy

ah’m outa work
for da holidays
ah tell mahself
dis is jes’ a phase
ah been on countless
interviews
ain’t got hired yet
so ah got da blues

hadda go on the dole
fo’ dis festive season
‘n right now mah life
got no rhyme or reason
bein’ unemployed at Christmas
ain’t no fun
but ah take comfort from da fact
dat ah’m not da only one

ah may be outa work for now
mah self-esteem may be shot
but dis shit won’t last forevuh –
ah know dis ain’t my lot
cuz soon da Lord will bless me
wit dat “you been hired” letter
& 2017 will be so much better

’tis the season

the council workers have been busy
removin’ all signs of Halloween
of the skeletons an’ pumpkins
not a trace can be seen

now toys are in the windows
Rudolph pullin’ Santa’s sleigh
endless adverts swamp the telly
on bargain hunters they seek to prey

take a stroll down the High Street
sale signs assault your eye
all promisin’ deep discounts
enticin’ you to buy

how I miss the good ol’ days
before Christmas turned commercial
when the color of tree
was not a matter controversial!
