house cleaning

it’s a dreich day
in my bonnie Dundee
but that don’t bother me
cuz I’m where I wanna be

even though I got
no money in the bank
peace is what I feel
as I clean my fish tank

my brother & my sisters
may be far away
but as I mop the floors
I find joy in this Sunday

surrounded by all kinds
of bric-a-brac
bits of love from people
who always have my back

a warm hat from my sister
wee Christmas tree from Jude
CDs from my boyfriend
music for my every mood

the pink fleece jersey
from my mother
African statues
from my brother

jewellery, booze & beach glass
Eeyores everywhere
all these signs reminding me
that I’ve loads of folks who care

so gratefully I clean my house
removing any mess or dirt
happy that today I’m free from
any mental or physical hurt

I’m thankful that I have a job
close family & friends to love
& my angel Mother & Father
guarding me from above

happy

she watches the sunrise
through curtains of lace
eager for the new day
reassured of God’s grace

her jeans & t-shirts
hang on the washin’ line
doin’ their dance
in hot August sunshine

though she’s scared
of the beasties that crawl in the dirt
gardenin’ helps her heal
it soothes every hurt

unlocking the red door
each day when she returns home
lovin’ the sound of silence
that comes from bein’ alone

fresh sheets on a new mattress
a waiter smilin’ & snappy
she realizes life is short:
she’s gonna spend hers bein’ happy

somethin’ to smile about

morning sunshine
clematis on the vine
coffee steamin’ hot
spaghetti in a pot

fish swimmin’ in their tank
a walk along the river bank
ironin’ my partner’s shirt
plungin’ my hands deep into dirt

freshly done hair
friends who show they care
knowin’ what comes next
an unexpected text

the poem that takes shape
the spider that didn’t escape
the shoes that went on sale
letters from home in the mail

Saturday mornin’ & Planet Rock
finally findin’ that missin’ sock
a bra that fits just right
Scotland’s luminescent light

in the car – away we go
Bowie on the radio
Sunday evenin’ glass of wine
your hand, always holding mine

reclaiming Glasgow

in the car
she loves to ride
craning her head
from side to side
pleased by this country’s
wide open spaces
& the expressions she sees
on other drivers’ faces

for another adventure
she is ready
watching his beloved hands
hold the steering wheel steady
as they ride through the rain
on their way to Glasgow
Springsteen encourages them
from the radio

it’s overcast in Alba
today there’s not much sun
but this doesn’t spoil her mood
she’s not deterred from having fun
safely seated next to the person
whose presence is most dear
hypnotized by Scottish skies
& a road ahead that’s clear

once Glasgow was synonymous
with much stress & pain
a solicitor made a mistake
& her life headed down the drain
thankfully she’s entered
into a happier season
so every day she thanks God
for the judge who saw reason

thus for this new adventure
she is more than ready
glancing at her boyfriend’s hands
as they hold the wheel steady
she sings along with Springsteen
on the car radio
rocketing through the rain
she’s set to reclaim Glasgow

messy love

after the birthday celebrations
she’s happy to attend to her chores
singin’ as she sweeps the cracker crumbs
from the polished floor

coffee cups & wine glasses
are washed & placed in the rack
a task she normally hates
but she’s jammin’ to Fleetwood Mac

so she’s happy as she works
givin’ praise to the powers above
that she’s been granted another year
to enjoy the fruits of messy love

the bedroom could use a good tidy
she thinks to herself whilst makin’ the bed
stoppin’ to bury her face in the pillow
that holds the shape of a much-loved head

lining the cushions up neatly
puttin’ the remotes back in their place
thankful for the weekend past
with all its tiny moments of grace

she’s hopeful as she works
offerin’ praise to the powers above
that in a world that’s often uncertain
she can always count on his messy love

messy love

when he leaves

every time he leaves
she struggles to understand
why the rooms in her tiny flat
seem to elongate and expand

all sunshine seems
to abandon the place
in protest at the absence
of his kind and gentle face

every time he leaves
she has a cigarette
replays their weekend memories
joy she’ll not forget

his departure leaves a void
that at first throws her off track
but she soon gets over it
secure in the knowledge he’ll be back

when he leaves

a garden in Dundee

from her kitchen windowsill
she idly watches a daffodil
marvelling at its sense of time
as it pushes through cold earth & leftover winter grime

sitting on her garden wall
she contemplates crocuses strugglin’ to stand tall
they too know just when to arrive
in spring sunshine they dance and thrive

standing on her precious patch of grass
she’s filled with a joy more fragile than glass
like the ivy entwined around the apple tree
she yields to the embrace of life’s mystery
