never too old

the little flat
is always clean
plants a-bloom,
lush & green

it appears
that everything is fine
no one sees
the chaos in her mind

Christmastime & she’s homesick
far from the land of her birth
middle-aged & unemployed
she questions her self-worth

sale signs & Christmas décor
as far as her brown eyes can see
she job hunts every day
battling against misery

interviews galore
they pass in a blur
is her age the reason
no one has hired her?

she works hard to stay cheerful
in her heart hope keeps hummin’
benefits help some
but the bills keep comin’

she’s a woman used to standin’
firmly on her own two feet
who dearly wants her life to return
to its familiar & orderly beat

she’s a strong woman, too
with adversity she can cope
she is not too old to work
she refuses to lose hope

loving, skilled & experienced
loyal, brave & bold
some smart company will see this:
they’ll recognize she’s not too old

get thee gone, Satan

there’s a monster that lives
behind her eyes
drowning out her good thoughts
with unholy cries
it buzzes in her head
like so many bees
distorting everything good
she sees

long has the monster lived
behind her eyes
spewing clouds of doubt
into her sunny blue skies
he brings bad dreams
disrupts her sleep
causing her – at odd times –
to moan & weep

the monster loves his home
behind her eyes
where 24/7
he plots her demise
but she’s blessed with
many allies
their power refutes
the monster’s lies

there’s a monster that lives
behind her eyes
I’ve got one, too,
so I sympathize
his delight is in falsehoods
which he spreads all day long
by God’s grace
I can resist
I stand tall, I stand strong

healing

she’s haunted
by events from her past
events & memories she wishes
did not last

but by this he is not bothered
for him her past holds no fright
he’s the shoulder she can lean on
the arms that enfold her every night

she’s been wounded
by words said, by deeds done
& he’s strong enough to face this,
though he’s the only one

the man who’s always there,
whose jokes bring a smile
the hand to hold that banishes
the darkness for a while

she’s damaged
but that doesn’t frighten him
each secret that he learns
only serves to enlighten him

aids him in dealing with her
on those days when she’s depressed
a blessing that means
her emotions don’t need to be supressed

healing

a woman

you cannot tell her
what to feel
& before your idols
she will not kneel
the things she knows
you can’t belie
her reality
you must not deny
intensely loyal
to family & friends
her loving hand
she quickly extends
a gentle heart
with a core of steel
unashamed of
her sex appeal
she can’t be restrained
by chains or locks
she’ll always break free
from any box
make her angry
or make her cry
accept the risk
that she might fly
but if you can
accept her need
she’ll happily follow
where you lead
& she will love you
deep & long
if you’ve the courage
to hear her song
